The professors in charge are currently working on the final details of the course design, which will address political analysis, Indigenous populations and their tensions in Latin America, and, finally, the securitization of borders. UDP’s Coordinator for Global Education and Cooperation, Carlos Ahumada, highlights the relevance of these new initiatives, which will strengthen and expand an inter-institutional relationship of more than 15 years.

Diego Portales University, together with Leiden University in the Netherlands, will implement three new COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) experiences. This modality is an educational methodology that connects classes from different countries to collaborate in online projects or activities, thereby fostering internationalisation and collaborative student and academic work between both institutions. At present, the teaching teams are finalising the design of the COIL modules, which will be integrated into their respective courses during the next academic term.

COIL 1: Public opinion and welfare state

This COIL links the course “Political Analysis Workshop: Public Opinion and Democracy”, taught by UDP academic Hernán Campos, with the course “Markets in the Welfare State”, taught by Leiden University academic Fabio Bulfone, an associate professor at the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs. The COIL module will enable students to engage with contemporary debates on the challenges facing welfare states and social policies from a comparative perspective. Through shared classes and activities, students will analyse the role of markets in welfare systems, as well as public opinion and its implications for democracy in different geographical contexts, promoting international academic exchange and joint learning between the two universities.

COIL 2: Indigenous populations and global studies

This COIL connects the course “Indigeneities in Latin America”, taught by Leiden academics Soledad Valdivia, Adriana Churampi Ramírez and Martine Bruil, with the course “Indigenous Population in Chile and the Americas”, taught by UDP academic Alejandro Rossi within the framework of the Global Studies Honours Diploma. The term indigeneity refers to the quality and experience of belonging to an Indigenous people, and the COIL module will focus on analysing contemporary issues related to tensions between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations in Latin America. Students will work collaboratively to formulate a central research question and develop sub-questions to be addressed individually; their work will culminate in a collective synthesis presented in multimedia format, fostering critical analysis, comparative research and intercultural dialogue.

COIL 3: Securitization and human mobility

The third COIL links the course “Human Realities of Securitization”, taught by UDP academic Constanza Jorquera, with the course “Border Criminologies: the Criminalization of Mobility”, offered by Leiden Law School academic Amalia Campos-Delgado. This COIL module will address the main theoretical and empirical debates surrounding the use of the concept of securitization in relation to borders and human mobility. Through collaborative work, students will analyse how border security policies shape political and social identities, as well as current conflicts and debates at local, national and global levels, encouraging critical reflection on citizenship, rights and mobility.

Added value and future mobility and academic cooperation

UDP’s Coordinator for Global Education and Cooperation, Carlos Ahumada, underscored the importance of this new form of virtual exchange between the two institutions, noting that it allows students to “travel academically without having to cover the more than 11,000 kilometres that separate Chile and the Netherlands”. He also emphasised that COIL experiences offer students the opportunity to learn how teaching and research are conducted at both Leiden University and UDP, bringing them closer to the cultures of both countries and enabling collaborative academic work. Following the virtual experience, students will be able to apply for an in-person exchange at Leiden University, while Leiden students may come to UDP for a semester; the COIL projects are expected to stimulate a greater flow of exchange students between the two institutions and to consolidate academic collaboration.

The coordinator concluded that “these types of initiatives contribute to strengthening institutional relations and to the academic development of our students, who also broaden their horizons for future opportunities in physical mobility, exchange programmes and other forms of international study”. The Director of International Relations, Anoek van den Berg, added that “initiatives such as COIL provide students with a highly concrete learning experience through which they develop intercultural competences that foster empathy, mutual understanding and critical comparative reflection, all of which are essential skills for future graduates and globally aware citizens”.

Registration time of courses at the UDP is approaching and in that context we call on students to learn about the offer that will be available this semester that allows you to internationalize your resume! The General Directorate of International Relations and the Department of General Studies will once again offer an offer of 5 courses that will be taught in English on different topics. Through these courses we seek to promote the development of applied linguistic competence in disciplinary areas, giving space for students to practice their language knowledge in academic contexts.

To encourage and incentivize students to take these courses, we have provided the following incentives and facilitators:

Classes will be taught in English, however, 100% use of this language is not an exclusive requirement, given that the greatest importance is given to learning content. Therefore, the teachers who teach these courses will have flexibility in allowing different dynamics regarding the use of the language, according to the needs and abilities of the students. During the semester the demand and level of use of English will increase.
There will be support available from a teaching assistant in English to resolve doubts, queries and provide support with questions about the language element of the course.
If students finish the course with at least a minimum grade of 4.0, they will be given an additional score of 0.5 to recognize the additional effort and challenge involved in participating in courses in another language.

All these subjects do not require prior knowledge in their subjects or disciplinary areas, however, we do recommend having a minimum level of English to be able to participate, where the ideal is that you have completed English III, or that you can understand, for example, movies and series in English or have a conversation about a topic of interest.

Get motivated to globalize your career at the UDP and you will see the benefits when looking for work in the future, having practiced and applied your English in disciplinary environments.

    Why take these subjects?

You will be able to meet students from other parts of the world, since these subjects are part of the course offerings taken by exchange students who visit the UDP.
You will be able to put your language knowledge into practice and lose your fear before, for example, daring to apply for an exchange in a country where knowledge of English is required.
Learn about topics that are of international relevance, which will add to having a global perspective to analyze topics of work interest.
Have fun! The teachers of these subjects are selected people with a CV with many relevant experiences and knowledge that will allow them to open their horizons. They seek to generate a common learning environment where ideas and experiences can be exchanged and there is interaction in the classroom based on respect and empathy.

How to sign up? The registration of these branches is done by registering general branches electronically between January 8 and 12, 2024.

All of these courses have 5 credits. Learn about the offer in detail below:

  10. Faculty from the School of Midwifery and Neonatology took an English course and global and intercultural competence at the Canadian University

Barbara Guttierez, an academic from the School of Obstetrics and Neonatology at the Faculty of Health and Dentistry completed a training course in English combined with classes on global competence and intercultural communication at Dalhousie University, Canada in August. This course is part of the new offer of the DGRRII for international complementary training, for access to graduates, students and teachers. The academic in this instance sought to improve her English language skills but also sought to strengthen her international network for research purposes.

He tells us that: “My experience at Dalhousie turned out to be very positive in different areas. First, I successfully met the initial objective of passing the English Learning Communication course and the Global Competence and Intercultural Communication elective course. In both, I highlight the expertise and professionalism of the teachers in charge, who motivated our participation through active and diverse methodologies. In the role of student we carried out individual and group work, where we were able to put written and oral language skills into practice, in addition to having participated in spaces for reflection and analysis on issues that are transversal and of global importance such as the environment, interculturality, leadership, globalization, among others.”

Apart from the academic, he highlights that “Personally, it was a very enriching experience, I was able to exchange opinions, stories and experiences with people from other countries and cultures, which allowed me to diversify and broaden the perspectives regarding the same problem, the biggest learning was to break paradigms and find value in inclusive views and free of individual interests, seeking strategies to contribute to a more productive and equitable society at the same time.”

Finally, he adds that “The opportunity was given to have a meeting with part of the Management team of the Faculty of Health of Dalhousie University, who received us in a very cordial and welcoming manner. At the meeting we were able to learn about the admission processes, articulation of subjects and graduation profile, in addition to other aspects such as the operation of the clinical simulation center, which operates in an interdisciplinary manner. Likewise, the space was opened for collaborative research work in my line of research, which is vaccination against HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) in the school population. One of the academics, Awdry Steenbeek, works on the same research topic, so we stayed in touch to continue future joint research.”

We thank Barbara for sharing her experience with us!
