International experiencies and testimonials

Valentina Ortiz Galaz

National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico

Valentina Ortiz, a Psychology student at UDP, went on an exchange to the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

How has your student/mobility exchange transformed your academic and personal perspective so far? And how do you believe it will help you in your professional and academic future? “It gives it a complete twist to the academic experience. In my case, coming from Psychology (a broad field with many pathways in the UDP provided within the study programme), I ended up in social psychology at the UNAM in CDMX, which has set me on a very different path from the main focus of my degree. It gave me the chance to participate in spaces and activities fully focused on community work, opening me up to this new experience and the challenges it entailed. Furthermore, it placed me in a university context very different from what we experience at UDP, allowing me to understand the issues arising there, which at times felt much larger than we usually face elsewhere, and to be respected as both a student and a person within an academic context. Situations like these, in my opinion, enrich future professional practice; they provide different tools to start implementing in daily life to strengthen future work, and offer a new perspective on everything we can achieve and how we can influence our own reality.”

For what reasons would you recommend other students to go on a student exchange/international mobility? You experience the culture in a completely different way than what you are used to. The chance to share with people from different parts of the world (not just the host country) enriches the experience and allows you to learn about realities that often seem far away. Being able to balance the academic side with the chance to explore another country or city, its culture, and its history is a unique experience that is absolutely worth having. Plus, the surprises along the way are wonderful, and the warm welcome from both peers and professors truly makes you feel like part of a new community, which is deeply appreciated.
