The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Manuel Vicuña, and the coordinator of the Centre for the Humanities and lecturer at the Institute of Philosophy, Luis Felipe Alarcón, participated in the latest edition of the annual meeting of the Global Humanities Network, which took place between 10 and 12 June at Sabancı University in Istanbul, Turkey.
This event marked a significant milestone for the organisation, as it was held outside the University of Cambridge for the very first time, bringing together academics from various institutions.
The forum was characterised by reflections on issues of global scope, such as the relationship between the humanities and public debate in a context of digital transformations; the role of translation in the discipline; and justice in the distribution of knowledge and its relevance to the formation of democratic citizenship. Within this framework, the Dean delivered the presentation “On the Humanities: Some Reflections”, while lecturer Alarcón addressed the topic “In Presence of All Languages of the World: Édouard Glissant and the Poetics of Translation”.
“The Global Humanities Network, in which UDP has participated through the Centre for the Humanities since its foundation in 2020, represents a powerful element of internationalisation, particularly regarding the University’s academics as well as PhD students,” stated Dean Manuel Vicuña.
In this regard, the university authority maintained that “these meetings make it possible to strengthen ties, reflect collectively, and set in motion new collaborative initiatives that contribute to a more robust institutionalisation of the network.” “We project the strengthening of its multilateral relations, fostering a fluid relationship among all the universities involved,” he concluded.
The Global Humanities Network was created to promote academic debate and cooperation in the social sciences and humanities. Its objective is to rethink research methods and analyse the role of the discipline within the university environment and the public sphere. Currently, the initiative relies on collaboration with various global institutions, including the University of Cambridge, Universidad Diego Portales, Ashoka University, the American University of Beirut, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Sabancı University, and the University of Ghana.
