17 October 2023

On Wednesday, October 4, a delegation from the consortium of Canadian universities CALDO met with authorities and researchers from the UDP in order to explore new ties of collaboration in the areas of Engineering and Psychology. This, after last year a similar delegation visited the UDP to learn about the work of the institutional area of the campus.

The visiting delegation was made up of Rodrigo Delgado, executive director of the consortium; Laury Pacheco, senior project coordinator; Lisa Matthew, University of Alberta; Marianne Simm, University of Waterloo; and Jessica Della-Latta, from Queens University.

Meanwhile, Anoek van den Berg, general director of International Relations, participated on behalf of the UDP; Rodrigo Garrido, dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences (FIC); Pablo Rojas, FIC Internationalization representative; Alejandra Rossi, director of the Master’s Degree in Social Neuroscience and Researcher at the Laboratory of Cognitive and Social Neuroscience (LaNCyS); Víctor Contreras and Christian González, academics at the UDP School of Civil Works; Karol Suchan, Víctor Reyes, Martín Gutiérrez, academics from the School of Informatics and Telecommunications; Andrés Díaz and Rodrigo Cáceres, academics from the School of Industrial Engineering; Vitalie Ermev, academician at the Institute of Basic Sciences; and José Luis Prieto and Paula Jofré, academics at the UDP Institute of Astrophysical Studies.

For Anoek van den Berg, general director of International Relations, “this visit was an important step” regarding the search for collaborations between the UDP and Canadian institutions, which, as she explained, “have a very high prestige educational level.” .

“The UDP is already part of the MITACS program that allows 2 undergraduate students to carry out research in Canada annually, in addition to seeking to increase applications for scholarships from the Emerging Leaders in the Americas – ELAP program, where we hope to increase our number in the future. participation to promote the mobility of students and professors between the UDP and Canadian institutions,” he commented.

On the other hand, Karol Suchan, academic at the School of Computing and Telecommunications of the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences and director of CITYLOG, expressed that this meeting was “extremely enriching.” “I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to get to know the Consortium in depth. From a Chilean perspective, it could be compared to the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities (CRUCH), to which the UDP belongs. However, the Consortium’s focus is notably broader than that of CRUCH, which provides us with a valuable source of learning,” said the academic.

“There were two aspects that especially caught my attention. First, the growing diversity of sources of support aimed at promoting collaborations with universities in Canada. I believe that it would be beneficial to make the most of the existing ones and, together, explore the possibility of creating new ones. Secondly, the notion of ‘cooperative education’, where the higher education of a student is carried out in collaboration between the university and a company, alternating periods of study and work in both institutions,” he added.

During the visit, the members of the delegation also participated in a talk about the study opportunities offered by CALDO universities. Finally, they oriented undergraduate and graduate students and alumni regarding these possibilities of internationalizing their career.
