On Monday, August 14, Luis Botello, an expert from the International Center for Journalists, participated in the meeting “Fact-Checking Movement in Chile, Latin America and the World”.

The activity was organized by the UDP School of Journalism and the United States Embassy and took place in the American Corner of the University, bringing together students from the School of Journalism, the School of Law and different high schools in Santiago. Valentina Marval, a UDP journalist and academic, and Rafael Ríos Lambruschini, a graduate in Legal Sciences, also participated.

During the meeting, Botello referred to the scope of misinformation and the possible causes of this phenomenon. Likewise, he discussed the motivations for misinformation and how social media algorithms feed this type of expression. Another prominent topic of the meeting was fact checking and the role of the press and its integrity.

The activity concluded with a game of the innovative game El Desinformante, which encourages its participants to discern between facts and misinformation. This card game is available in the American Corner UDP so that anyone can test her ability to identify false information.

Luis Botello has an extensive career in the field of journalism and has become a defender of press freedom. He currently serves as Assistant Vice President for Strategy and Global Impact at the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), where he oversees the ICFJ’s monitoring, evaluation and learning process.
