UDP students participate in the COIL project on the markets of Chile and Mexico

18 October 2023

The team from the General Directorate of International Relations (DGRII), together with a teacher from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, carried out the course “Comparative macroeconomic variables between Chile and Mexico”, which was developed within the framework of the subject of Introduction to Economics at the UDP Faculty of Engineering and Sciences.

This instance arose under the auspices of a COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) project, a methodology promoted by the DGRII that seeks to enhance the international training of students, through the development of a virtual exchange with a foreign university.

On this occasion, the course was carried out with the objective of introducing students to macroeconomic analysis through the formulation and resolution of problems from a scientific and comparative perspective between Chile and Mexico.

The activity began on October 4 and included the participation of 40 students from the Faculty of Economics of the Mexican institution and 21 students from the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences of the UDP. During its development, the students were divided into groups in order to encourage interaction and internationalization of their experience. For this reason, one of the first instances of the program was an icebreaking activity. Issues related to GDP, neoliberalism in Mexico and the scope of economic policies in Chile were also addressed.

Richard Gillibrand, coordinator of International Student Mobility of the DGRRII and UDP professor in charge of COIL, said that one of the interesting aspects of the course was the comparison that the students were able to make of the Chilean and Mexican markets, identifying their magnitude. and government regulations that affect these economies.

“Analyzing the comparison of the realities of Chile and Mexico in a project of this type can provide valuable lessons about economics, politics, international cooperation and the development of intercultural competencies. The diversity of approaches and contexts offers a unique opportunity for student learning,” said the professional.

For the professor in charge of this course, COIL could be a pilot so that, in the coming months, the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences develops new COIL projects. According to him, “the idea is that the greatest number of students benefit from this type of international activities that fall within the global training axis of the UDP Internationalization Policy that seeks to insert the international dimension into the curriculum.”
