7 July 2023

This Thursday, July 6, the General Directorate of International Relations met with teachers, students, and alumni who, between July 17 and August 11, will take an intensive English course at Dalhousie University, Canada.

They are the academics Bárbara Gutiérrez and Solange Liempi; the alumni Javiera Salinas (Accountant Auditor); and the students Alejandra López (Journalism), Renato Bravo (Industrial Civil Engineering), Valentina Calquin (Dentistry) and Javiera Sepúlveda (Business Engineering), who, through this program, will live a unique experience of internationalization.

Anoek van den Berg, General Director of International Relations, highlighted the trip and indicated: “We are very happy to have a first group that travels to be part of this intensive course at a highly prestigious institution in Canada and that also has a representativeness of faculties and disciplinary areas, in addition to profiles, having both teachers, alumni and undergraduate students in their delegation”, he stressed.

To carry out this course, the General Directorate of International Relations awarded scholarships to three students – Journalism, Industrial Civil Engineering and Dentistry – with the financing of the course, lodging, meals, health insurance and round trip transfer to the airport in Halifax.

In order to share the journey and the knowledge that will be given under the wing of this program, the student body will report their internationalization experience through social networks and through a DGRII blog. The idea is that the more than 90 students who were not selected in the scholarship call can live the experience, the moments and the learning through the testimonials of these UDP International Ambassadors.

In this context, Valentina Calquin, a second-year Dentistry student, valued the possibility of taking the course in Canada, above all, because of the opportunities that open up with it: “For me it is super important, because I have a great interest in developing my career internationally.

For the academic of the School of Obstetrics and Neonatology, Bárbara Gutiérrez, this program is also relevant. As she indicated, with this she will be able to make her English more fluent and, in addition, she will be able to learn about other areas of her specialty. This will allow you to contribute to the training of the UDP student body.

For her part, Solange Lempi, UDP Nursing teacher, expressed that this is a “great” opportunity. With this, she will be able to improve her communication skills in English, both at the level of reading and verbal communication, which will be a contribution to her teaching and research within the University.

This course will take place over four weeks and includes English classes in the morning. In addition, in the afternoons, instances will be held in the UDP community, they will be able to choose a topic of interest to apply and deepen their knowledge.

For the DGRRII, this program is part of the extracurricular opportunities that promote internationalization and the development of language skills that are extremely relevant for the future of work and the teaching and research development of the student body and faculty.
