Elaina decided to come to our country because of “the climate and nature across the regions of Chile, and also the history is more interesting.”

On the other hand, Angel also highlighted the wonders of Latin America and explained that he seeks to experience a new culture to improve his Spanish. “I wanted to learn about a new culture, in a new country, with a language that feels somewhat familiar to me, but still foreign. Because I also wanted to improve my spoken Spanish and better understand a Latin American country, since I haven’t been to Latin America in years. So, it is a very new place and a very beautiful country,” he said.

For his part, Alex noted that he had always wanted to stay in this part of the world. “Because I like nature a lot, because I want to learn more Spanish, and I want to live in South America, because I love South America,” he told us.

This experience will allow them to integrate into university life at UDP, take courses, and experience Chilean culture firsthand, thereby strengthening their academic and personal formation in an international environment.

Regarding their expectations at UDP, the students particularly valued the possibility of integrating into Chilean university life. Angel highlighted that he hopes to learn from a different perspective than that of his home university.

“I hope to learn how to work with other education systems here, because it is different from the United States, and also to learn among other students who are not American, who are Chilean, (…) because in other study abroad programs, you study with other American students in your own language. You don’t get involved in their culture. I want to learn among them and learn with a Chilean professor, in a Chilean class in Santiago,” Angel emphasized.

In addition to their academic experience, they hope to travel to different corners of the country, especially Patagonia, visit the museums of Santiago, and discover Chilean gastronomy and culture.

The academic collaboration agreement with American University has a history of more than 15 years with UDP, which is why the General Directorate of International Relations is very pleased to once again welcome a group of students. We give them a warm welcome and hope that this semester at UDP will be an enriching experience, filled with learning, new challenges, and lasting connections.

Universidad Diego Portales welcomed Alex, Angel, and Elaina, three students from American University (Washington, D.C., United States), who will carry out an academic exchange at UDP during this second semester of 2026.
