{"id":12962,"date":"2026-05-19T15:53:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T19:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/internacional.udp.cl\/?p=12962"},"modified":"2026-07-01T09:12:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T13:12:00","slug":"direccion-general-de-relaciones-internacionales-realizo-conversatorio-con-cineasta-polaco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internacional.udp.cl\/en\/direccion-general-de-relaciones-internacionales-realizo-conversatorio-con-cineasta-polaco\/","title":{"rendered":"Polish Filmmaker Pawe\u0142 Wysocza\u0144ski Visits UDP for Film Screening and Discussion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Friday, May 15, in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities auditorium, the General Office of International Relations, in conjunction with Globaliza UDP and the Embassy of Poland in Chile, hosted a screening of the film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mensch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, followed by a conversation with its director, Polish filmmaker Pawe\u0142 Wysocza\u0144ski.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event began with remarks from Anoek van den Berg, General Director of International Relations, who highlighted the director\u2019s visit to the University: \u201cWe greatly appreciate your interest in coming as part of the International Month we are currently holding, and we thank the Embassy of Poland in Chile for providing us this opportunity for our students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mensch <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was screened. The feature film, released in 2024, portrays the life of Ludwik Hirszfeld (1884-1954), an outstanding physician from a Jewish family and the creator of the Polish school of immunology. Through archival materials and reenactments, the film presents Hirszfeld as a mensch, which, according to the filmmaker, means \u201ca human being of integrity, noble, and deeply committed to the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, a conversation took place between the director and Journalism student Nicol\u00e1s Merino, with translation by Victoria Sarian. The discussion covered the archival work, the reenactments, and the doctor\u2019s life story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding how he became interested in Hirszfeld\u2019s story, Wysocza\u0144ski commented: \u201cMy nephew from Wroc\u0142aw, who is a doctor, told me about Hirszfeld. So I started reading about him. And the more I read, the more I couldn\u2019t believe I had never heard of him before,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was so surprised that such an exceptional personality had no film about him, no book about him, nothing. There is an autobiography by Ludwik Hirszfeld called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Story of a Life<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a biography of both Ludwik and Hanna, but there was no film.
