{"id":12546,"date":"2025-12-15T10:55:31","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T13:55:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/internacional.udp.cl\/?p=12546"},"modified":"2026-04-23T15:55:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T19:55:39","slug":"academicos-as-udp-internacionalizan-e-innovan-en-sus-asignaturas-gracias-a-aplicacion-de-metodologia-coil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internacional.udp.cl\/en\/academicos-as-udp-internacionalizan-e-innovan-en-sus-asignaturas-gracias-a-aplicacion-de-metodologia-coil\/","title":{"rendered":"UDP academics internationalize and innovate in their classrooms through COIL methodology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the second semester of 2025, and with the support of the <\/span><b>General Directorate of International Relations (DGRRII)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, five UDP academics developed projects based on the <\/span><b>COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> methodology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These initiatives were carried out to foster internationalization experiences in synergy with foreign academic institutions. The faculty members involved were: <\/span><b>Alejandro Rossi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who worked alongside <\/span><b>University College Cork<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Ireland); <\/span><b>Mar\u00eda \u00c1ngela Cifuentes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, linked with the <\/span><b>Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><b>Paulina Morales<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who participated with the <\/span><b>Francisco Moraz\u00e1n National Pedagogical University<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Honduras); <\/span><b>Scarlet Elgueta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who collaborated with <\/span><b>Universidad del Norte<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Colombia); and <\/span><b>Javiera Pe\u00f1a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose project partnered with the <\/span><b>University of Buenos Aires<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Argentina).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Carlos Ahumada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Coordinator of International Cooperation and Global Formation, indicated that since 2022, the University\u2014through the DGRRII, the Directorate of Teaching Development, and the Office of the Academic Vice President\u2014has led various training sessions to introduce the COIL methodology to the faculty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, he noted, the <\/span><b>Internationalization of Learning Processes Fund (FIPA) \u2013 COIL<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was launched in 2023. Its objective is to promote the transversal incorporation of international, intercultural, and global dimensions into curricular programs. \u201cThis fund expands &#8216;Internationalization at Home&#8217; opportunities for students who cannot participate in physical mobility, offering them the chance to interact with students from other countries, collaborate on joint tasks, and strengthen their intercultural competencies,\u201d Ahumada commented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The implementation of COIL projects has been positively evaluated by the university community, primarily because it has allowed for the integration of an international dimension into subjects and has driven permanent innovation in course design.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Perspectives from the Faculty<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Alejandro Rossi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who taught the General Education Course (CFG) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indigenous Populations<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, developed a project to establish dialogue on the importance of recognizing multiple cultural perspectives regarding linguistic practices and their relationship to decolonization studies. He described the experience as enriching, as it allowed for &#8220;understanding the working logics of other parts of the world, recognizing similarities and differences&#8221; to ultimately &#8220;adapt and collaborate in diverse learning and work contexts.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Professor Mar\u00eda \u00c1ngela Cifuentes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted a COIL project on recent history through photography and memory exercises. She noted that the experience allowed students to encounter new realities and develop critical thinking skills. \u201cThe project focused on shared dialogue between groups from two universities with different majors to achieve an exchange of opinions on shared problems,\u201d she explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Professor Scarlet Elgueta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose COIL project focused on bringing Astronomy closer to students, indicated that the activity encouraged students to \u201cdiscover that the southern hemisphere sky unites them.\u201d She reflected that \u201cCOIL programs represent a window to explore scenarios that are no longer unfeasible, such as studying a semester abroad or considering a postgraduate degree outside the country.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>A Global Pedagogical Strategy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COIL methodology is a pedagogical strategy that allows students and professors from different parts of the world to collaborate on joint projects through virtual platforms. Popularized by the <\/span><b>State University of New York (SUNY)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this methodology has gained ground globally due to its ability to foster intercultural learning without the need for physical mobility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At UDP, COIL projects are a key methodology for the <\/span><b>Global Formation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> strategic axis.
