{"id":12533,"date":"2025-12-10T11:39:48","date_gmt":"2025-12-10T14:39:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/internacional.udp.cl\/?p=12533"},"modified":"2026-04-23T15:54:57","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T19:54:57","slug":"academica-de-la-u-de-leiden-dicta-charla-en-el-diploma-de-honor-en-global-studies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internacional.udp.cl\/en\/academica-de-la-u-de-leiden-dicta-charla-en-el-diploma-de-honor-en-global-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Leiden University academic delivers lecture for the Honors Diploma in Global Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>The expert on migration and mobility in the Americas presented the lecture &#8220;Border Externalization and Transit Control Regimes: A Look at the Mexican Case.&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the promotion and strengthening of global education, directors from the <\/span><b>General Directorate of International Relations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Directorate of General Studies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coordinated the participation of <\/span><b>Amalia Campos-Delgado<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an academic from <\/span><b>Leiden University<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and an expert in migration, for the final session of the <\/span><b>Honors Diploma in Global Studies (DHGS)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Wednesday, November 26, the Assistant Professor of Law and Society at the <\/span><b>Van Vollenhoven Institute<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Leiden University) delivered the keynote lecture: <\/span><b>\u201cBorder Externalization and Transit Control Regimes: A Look at the Mexican Case.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combining perspectives from political sociology, international relations, and criminology, Dr. Campos-Delgado revealed the infrastructure of global mobility. Using the case of migration control in Mexico\u2014her home country\u2014as a reference point, she introduced a series of key concepts that she argues are replicated across multiple borders, particularly those characterized by precariousness and a lack of state presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Architecture of Repulsion<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote border control, externalization, the outsourcing of border enforcement, and the <\/span><b>\u201carchitecture of repulsion\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were presented as the backbone of the political management of migration, marked by power asymmetries between nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scholar paid special attention to the ethical implications of the global mobility infrastructure, which is currently sustained by restrictions and discrimination based on nationality, race, and class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRestrictive migration policies do not deter migration. They make it harder, more expensive, and more violent. If migration control becomes more restrictive, more people will have to resort to the irregular crossing industry because there are no other ways out,\u201d she highlighted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, she asserted that through these policies, <\/span><b>\u201cthe externalizing State finances and authorizes human rights violations and evades responsibility.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>The &#8220;Criminal Model&#8221; of Migration<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From this context, she explained, arises what has been termed the <\/span><b>\u201cCriminal Model of Migration\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the application of crime control logic within migration contexts. This construction, she deepened, positions the <\/span><b>\u201cmigrant as an enemy,\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dehumanizing them and creating moral and political distancing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This culture, she pointed out, ultimately leads to the breakdown of empathy. \u201cWhat criminalization does is that, even when a person is right next to you, you cannot make a human connection because they are constructed as a &#8216;criminal other&#8217;.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Leiden University academic urged the audience to understand that mobility categories are constructed historically and geographically, prompting the question: <\/span><b>\u201cWho profits from restrictive migration?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before concluding, Dr. Campos-Delgado encouraged students to question everything, keeping in mind that <\/span><b>\u201cmigrants are a political tool.
